National Press Club, Barton, Canberra
17 November 2009, 4pm-5pm.
17 November is the launch date for the ANMC Standards and Criteria for the Accreditation of Nursing and Midwifery Courses Leading to Registration, Enrolment, Endorsement and Authorisation in Australia.
Professional course accreditation is essential to ensure the quality of the professions and their work in the interests of public safety. Consistency of standards is paramount in ensuring that the high standards of nursing and midwifery in Australia are maintained. These new standards provide a national approach to the accreditation requirements for the education of nurses and midwives in Australia. The standards are the result of two years research and extensive consultation with the nursing and midwifery professions, consumers and other stakeholders.
The launch of the national accreditation standards also coincides with the appointment of the first national Nurses and Midwives Board of Australia and the implementation of a national scheme for the regulation of health professionals.
The ANMC is very pleased to welcome Mr Russell McGowan, Consumer Commissioner, Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care, who will attend and launch the Accreditation Standards. Mr McGowan has a long and distinguished record of support for Safety and Quality of health care for consumers.
Adjunct Professor Moira Laverty, Chair of the ANMC will also speak at the launch on behalf of the ANMC. Professor Laverty has extensive experience in the regulation of the nursing and midwifery professions.
