GOOD NEWS WEEK AT THE CON
The expertise of Con alumni and a senior lecturer has been honoured on three different
international fronts this week.
1.
Organ graduate Andrej Kouznetsov has been appointed Organ Scholar at Salisbury Cathedral
in England. Andrej, a former student of lecturer Philip Swanton, will take up the post in
September next year.
He is currently Organist at the heritage listed St James Church in King Street, Sydney.
2.
Renowned young conductor, Daniel Smith, has received a commission to conduct the
Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the national orchestra of Sweden and considered a global
leader in the field.
Daniel, the winner of the 2009 Helpmann Award for emerging Australian conductors,
studied under Con Maestro Professor Imre Pallo, Chair of Conducting and Opera Production.
He has been Assistant Conductor for the past five years to Italian Maestro Gianluigi
Gelmetti.
He will lead the Gothenburg in January in a program which will include Australian composer
Graeme Koehne’s Powerhouse.

Associate Professor Kathryn Marsh, the Chair of Music Education at The Con, was awarded
the Folklore Society’s Katherine Briggs award in London for her acclaimed book “The Musical
Playground–Global Tradition and Change in Children’s Songs and Games” (Oxford University
Press).
In April, the book was the focus of presentations at the International Research in Music
Education conference at Exeter University in England, and later at Cambridge University and
the University of Sheffield, as well as the University of Stavanger (Norway).
Over a 15 year period of observing students in playgrounds in a range of countries, Marsh’s
internationally recognised research has involved analysis of more than 70 hours of field
recordings covering 2,172 musical games across 333 different genres.
The Dean and Principal of The Con, Professor Kim Walker, said:
