HOLMESGLEN STUDENT WINS VICTORIAN TRAINING AWARD
Former Holmesglen student Michael Hogan, from Sunbury, has won the Victorian Vocational Student of the
Year Award. Michael was one of four finalists at the Victorian Training Awards 2010 in the Victorian
Vocational Student of the Year category.
I was ecstatic to win the state finals and feel fortunate to not only be rewarded for doing something I love but
being able to pursue a career in it, I found Holmesglen is the perfect combination of hands on trade work and
practical theory said Hogan.
After completing his Certificate II in Automotive Electrical Technology, Hogan started his own automotive
accessory business, contracting to various Victorian stores. He went on to complete the Certificate IV in
Training & Assessment at Holmesglen and is now teaching the same subjects he learned at Holmesglen! He
is also a lieutenant with the CFA and labels himself as a walking advocate for vocational training.
Charles Vella, Coordinator of Automotive Technology at Holmesglen said, "I'm so proud to see Michael
putting the skills he has learnt into practice in his own classroom. He is passionate about passing on his
knowledge to others."
The Victorian Training Awards are one of the ways the Victorian Government rewards outstanding
achievements and innovations in vocational education and training. The Awards recognise the valuable
contribution of apprentices, trainees, students, teachers, employers, training providers and industry in
building a world class vocational education and training system in Victoria.
In May this year, Hogan also jointly won the Outstanding Certificate Student award at Holmesglens Awards
Festival. The award recognised Michaels commitment to learning, his entrepreneurial skills as well as his
passion for passing on his knowledge.
Over 530,000 students undertook a course within the vocational training sector in 2009. The State Training
Awards are hotly contested by nominations from students who excel at all of the 18 Victorian TAFE Institutes
and many of the private providers. It is a great honour to become a finalist in one of the student award
categories and an even greater one to be awarded the title of winner which brings with it a prize of $10,000
in cash
