School generates wealth of AFL talent
Governor Stirling Senior High School staff and students wont know who to barrack for next
football season after four past students were selected in last weekends AFL National Draft.
Nicholas Naitanui, who earlier this year recorded the highest leap in AFL Draft Camp history,
graduated from Governor Stirling Senior High School in 2007. He was the number two draft
pick selected by the West Coast Eagles.
Chris Yarran who attended the school from 2003 to 2005 before enrolling at Clontarf Football
Academy, and was selected by Carlton at draft pick six.
Todd Banfield, attended the school from 2003 to 2007 and was selected at pick 41 by the
Brisbane Lions.
Jarrad Blight graduated from Governor Stirling Senior High School this year and was selected
by Collingwood at draft pick 45.
All four students took part in the schools football program.
Physical education teacher Andrew Davini, who manages the football program, said he
anticipated the new AFL rookies would perform well.
Each of these boys were brilliant leaders around the school and they deserve all the
wonderful things that are happening to them now, Mr Davini said.
Their selection in the National Draft is a great motivation for the younger students and we
know they will be excellent role models for our students, so we hope to have more success in
the future.
The schools specialist football program takes in students from Year 8 to Year 12 and
incorporates fitness, nutrition, leadership, skills and on-field tactics.
Mr Davini said the program, which began in 2001, was closely linked to Swan Districts Football
Club and junior clubs in the district. In 2008, there were more than 100 students in the
program.
We have now had some remarkable success with this program and we are very pleased with
the way our students are graduating as confident, well-rounded young adults, he said.
Department of Education and Training Director General Sharyn ONeill said the result reflected
the high quality of public education in WA.

These young men will serve as an inspiration to other WA public school students, she said.
I congratulate Nicholas, Chris, Todd and Jarrad on being drafted into the AFL and wish them
successful AFL careers.
It is the second successful year in the AFL National Draft for Governor Stirling Senior High
School, after student Tony Notte was selected by the West Coast Eagles in 2007.
