STATEMENT FROM THE VICTORIAN REGISTRATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
AUTHORITY
1 February 2010
Lynn Glover, Director of the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA),
issued the following statement in relation to the announcement that GEOS Melbourne Pty
Ltd has appointed Ernst & Young as voluntary administrators.
The VRQA was formally advised of the appointment of Ernst & Young as the Administrators of
GEOS Melbourne Pty Ltd and eight other associated companies operating training colleges in
Australia on 29 January 2010.
I have confirmed that the Administrators met with some of the staff and students in Melbourne on
Friday and advised them that the financial position of the companies is such that the directors
appointed voluntary administrators. I was advised by the Administrators yesterday that the
Melbourne college is closed while they assess the financial situation so that a decision on future
operations can be made.
The appointment of administrators is a commercial decision of the company directors. Through our
Financial Heath Assessment process, the VRQA had discovered that the Directors have been
diverting revenue from GEOS Melbourne to support the operations of other holdings in both
Australia and overseas.
In response to this situation, immediately prior to the appointment of administrators the VRQA had
been negotiating for the establishment of a trust fund and other arrangements which would have
secured funds in the Melbourne business.
The first concern of the VRQA is the welfare of the students. The VRQA has written to the
Administrators requesting a meeting to ensure that they understand the need to support and
protect the interests of students.
It is not possible to predict the outcome of the administrative arrangements, but the VRQA will
ensure that students rights are protected throughout the process.
