Swanston Street Parade
Melbournes newest graduating students will take over the city streets tomorrow
(Wednesday, 16 December) at RMIT Universitys annual Graduation Parade.
More than 3,000 graduating students, alumni and staff in academic gowns and
mortarboards will parade down Swanston Street from RMIT to Federation Square,
with more than 8,000 supporters lining the route.
This years new graduating students include Trisha Silvers (previously Trisha
Broadbridge), who will graduate with a Graduate Diploma in International
Development. Ms Silvers works with the Reach organisation and the field work for
her Graduate Diploma was carried out in Thailand over the five years since the
Tsunami of Boxing Day 2004.
The colourful parade will be followed by the Australias biggest graduation event
at Etihad Stadium in the evening, where more than 5,600 RMIT graduates will
celebrate their achievements in front of approximately 28,000 family members and
friends. The eight finalists from RMIT Idol 2009 will sing the national anthem.
Keynote speakers at the Ceremony include RMIT alumni, Alexis Wright, an activist
for Aboriginal land rights and award-winning author, who will be awarded an
honorary doctorate; and James Sanders, Innovation Analyst with Deloitte Touche
Tohmatsu and founder of The Hive entrepreneur group.
RMIT graduates from across the Universitys 24 academic schools will converge
on the stadium for the spectacular Graduation Ceremony one of the biggest in
the southern hemisphere and the 10th RMIT University has held at the Docklands
stadium.
