MEDIA RELEASE

Government stimulus package lifts demand for public sector jobs

The profile of government jobs has been given a renewed edge, with

economic stimulus and

infrastructure projects increasing the significance and appeal of jobs in the public sector.

According to Kelly Executive – the executive recruitment division of global workforce solutions

provider Kelly Services – many workers are flocking to government roles both for their financial

stability and the enhanced prestige

arising from major government stimulus

and infrastructure

projects.

Managing Director of Kelly Executive, Paul Dickinson, said the general uncertainty in the market

flowing from the economic downturn has helped to increase the popularity of work in the public

sector.

“Candidates are expressing

a desire

for

roles that provide stability and long-term career

opportunities, and currently many of these attributes can be found in government roles.”

Mr Dickinson said that being a part of the public sector

at a time when many large-scale

government projects are being rolled-out is a smart career move.

“Given that the government has injected cash into sectors where many in the private sector

have curbed spending, there are many significant roles being created within the public sector.

“The quality of the roles and the longer term opportunities available, mean

that professionals,

who may not

have considered the public sector, now see it as an exciting career path and

a

useful way of gaining unparalleled experience should they wish to return to corporate life.

“The level of opportunity, scale and cost of projects in which

some public sector workers are

engaged, means they are a drawcard when looking to return to the private sector.”

Mr Dickinson said the government continues to hire across sectors including finance,

administration, technology and industrial sectors, however the engineering sector is seeing the

most opportunities due to infrastructure developments.

He says the selection process, although always stringent, has been intensified as the pool of

available talent has expanded due to job losses from the economic downturn.
