Statement from NSW Law Society President concerning the
appointment of Magistrate Ellen Skinner
The Law Society of NSW has today thrown its support behind the appointment of
Magistrate Ellen Skinner to the bench of the Local Court of NSW.
President of the Law Society of NSW, Joe Catanzariti has welcomed Magistrate
Skinner’s selection to the bench adding that her appointment is due recognition
not only of her talent and ability, but also of the profession of solicitors from which
she comes.
“Age should never be a factor when selecting candidates to sit on the benches of
our courts,” Mr Catanzariti said.
“Magistrate Skinner was ultimately signalled out by the selection committee and
chosen by the Attorney General because she has the skill-set, ability and
experience that make her a valuable asset to the court.”
Mr Catanzariti said the process of selection is transparent and stringent.
“All candidates are carefully vetted and appointments are not taken lightly”, Mr
Catanzariti said.
“The Society not only welcomes the appointment of Magistrate Skinner but hopes
many more of the profession’s talented and capable solicitors continue to be
selected from its ranks to sit on the bench.”
