Media Release - National Marriage Day – 13th

August 2009

The Nuts and Bolts of Marriage

Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation has joined the Australian Family Association in showing its support

for an Annual National Marriage Day to uphold the values and unique benefits of marriage, and to lay a

foundation for a renewed culture of marriage within Australia.

August 13th

2009, also coincides with the release of an

updated edition of the Dads4Kids Fatherhood

Foundation publication,

’21 Reasons Why Marriage Matters’.

This

edition has 146 researched

footnotes. Marriage is more than a private emotional relationship. It is a social good and solid research

is pointing the way toward new family and community interventions to help strengthen marriages.

A well known Sydney

journalist made commentary on 4th August 2009 in the Daily Telegraph which

echoes Dads4Kids’ social concern: ‘At its simplest, a marriage is reflected in the relationship between

a nut and a bolt. A single nut is not much use. Neither is a bolt, but two used in tandem as they are

designed to be used, form an effective fastener. Two nuts don’t make it, nor two bolts. Try to put them

together and they don’t marry’

Mark and Rochelle Jeffery from Dads4Kids said “The nut and the bolt when joined together, as they

were designed, can connect steel, can build bridges, and have built the foundations of this country.

Marriage is the foundation of families throughout Australia.

’21 Reasons Why Marriage Matters’ gathers some of the greatest minds and research and explores the

social and economic impact of successful, and not so successful, marriages in our world today. This 24

page booklet is available on request.

The best way to protect and support children

is to protect and support marriage. Therefore marriage

should be encouraged and supported by government, society and individuals in every possible way. The

National Marriage Coalition believes that there should be a

coordinated national government

campaign to publicise the benefits of marriage as shown in the Why Marriages Matters research

document.”

Mark and Rochelle continue, According to a recent study, 75-85% of young people want to build a

strong and stable marriage, have children and establish loving and long-lasting families.” Karolina &

Richard Fowler, whose photos were used along with others for the publication, remarked, “Marriage

for us is a sacred union that expresses the complimentarity of our masculinity and femininity. It’s more

than a contract; it’s a call to a lifetime of unbroken commitment”.
