Melbournes future tourism leaders graduate from
inaugural leadership program
The twenty-five participants of Melbournes first program designed to develop future leaders
for the tourism industry will graduate at a special event this evening.
The inaugural 2009 Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Program
is a ground
breaking professional development program that gives people with a demonstrated interest in
tourism the opportunity to grow as leaders within the industry.
Selected after a rigorous application process, the first graduates represent the first graduates
represent marketers, administrators, managers and strategists from major tourist attractions,
cultural and sporting icons, hospitality, tourism services and destinations and collectively
herald the future of the tourism industry for greater Melbourne and Victoria.
The six month program covered issues in sustainable and nature based tourism, destination
marketing, major events and future trends and involved a wide range of industry leaders from
Melbournes Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, Tourism Victorias CEO, Greg Hywood and Lonely
Planet founder Steve Hibbard among others.
The 10 full day workshops also provided development of other essential skills from public
speaking, conflict management, critical thinking and developing collective leadership for the
tourism industry.
Pioneered by Destination Melbourne, the Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Program
was also supported by Tourism Victoria, City of Melbourne and Tourism Alliance Victoria -
and the success of the first program has guaranteed its continuation in 2010.
