PARRAMATTA LEADS THE WAY WITH

NEW WAYFINDING SYSTEM

Parramatta City is the first city in Australia to develop and install a groundbreaking

pedestrian wayfinding system – Walk Parramatta – to help visitors, residents and commuters

better navigate the city on foot.

Designed on the principles of the world’s best practice wayfinding project - Legible London –

the system provides a range of information on street signs and printed maps to assist

pedestrians build an understanding of the overall city area, giving them the confidence to

easily walk to their destinations.

“I am delighted to launch in the City of Parramatta this state-of-the-art wayfinding system,”

said Lord Mayor of Parramatta City Council, Cr Paul Garrard.

“From the Riverfront to Church Street Mall, Old Government House and beyond, Parramatta

is a dynamic city with plenty to offer. Council continues to campaign for a sustainable

transport system to encourage more visitors to discover Parramatta, and the Walk

Parramatta system will help people to easily get around the city once they are here,” he said.

“With the 54 stylish, new easy-to-read on-street signs, maps and fingerposts signs which

have been installed across central Parramatta and Harris Park we hope to empower people

to explore the city and discover why Parramatta has the potential to become one of Sydney’s

top tourist destinations,” said Cr Garrard.

As the heart of Western Sydney – Australia’s fastest growing economy – Parramatta is also

a thriving and growing business district housing 30 percent of Australia's top 500 companies.

“There is an urgent need for an effective wayfinding system which will reduce the strain on

our public transport system as Parramatta prepares for huge growth, with 30,000 new jobs

slated for the CBD of Parramatta by 2030,” said Cr Garrard.

“Walking is not just a popular way to get around but is often quicker. A journey on foot

through Parramatta’s laneways and byways to its many precincts reveals beautiful

parklands, a great mix of dining, entertainment, arts and cultural offerings this vibrant city

has to offer,” he said.

“I encourage our community and visitors to Walk Parramatta and discover what the earliest

settlers of Australia already knew - that Parramatta is a great place to live work and play,”

said Cr Garrard.
