Australia awarded hosting of

International Olympiad in Informatics 2013 in Brisbane

The hosting of the IOI 2013 has been awarded to Australia and will be held in

Brisbane on the University of Queensland campus under an arrangement between

the University of Queensland and the Australian Mathematics Trust.

This was announced at the 21st International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), which was

held this year in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Australia's Informatics Olympiad team won three Bronze Medals at the IOI, held from

August 8 to 15, 2009.

More than 300 students from 85 countries participated in the annual computer science

competition for secondary school students. The two-day contest includes computer

programming and solving algorithmic problems, with students competing on individual

and team levels.

The medallists, all from Sydney, are Evgeny Martynov of James Ruse Agricultural

High School (Carlingford), Daniel Berger of Moriah College (Queens Park) and

Kenneth Wong also from James Ruse.

Team Leader was Bernard Blackham, while Deputy Team Leader was David

Greenaway, both from Sydney.

Australia’s participation in the Informatics Olympiad program is administered by the

not-for-profit Australian Mathematics Trust, based at the University of Canberra. Trust

Executive Director, Professor Peter Taylor, said, "Many of Australia's leading

scientists under the age of about 40 are products of these programs and are serving

their country in science in areas such as climate change and defence."

The Australian Government provides significant support through its Department of

Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR). The Australian Computer

Society provides further assistance.

IOI patrons are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation

(UNESCO) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The

Honorary Patron of IOI 2009 was Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.
