AUSTRALIA’S BEST BRAINS SET TO BATTLE IT OUT AT

INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS OLYMPIADS

Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, will present the

Olympiad Australian student team members with their blazers at a special ceremony in Parliament

House, Canberra, on Wednesday 27 May 2009.

Twenty-three brilliant Year 11 and 12 students will use brains instead of brawn in their quest for

Olympic gold when they take on the world’s best in the 2009 International Science and Mathematics

Olympiads.

The science, mathematics and informatics stars will go head to head with thousands of students from

around 100 countries worldwide in biology, chemistry, informatics, mathematics and physics

competitions in Tsukuba (Japan), Merida (Mexico), Bremen (Germany), Plovdiv (Bulgaria) and

Cambridge (UK) in July and August.

Thousands of students competed for selection in the teams, through national competitions, exams

and training camps. Teachers across the country use the Olympiads to encourage students to study

science and mathematics and to excite them about the possibilities of careers in these areas.

The science teams were selected after an intensive summer scholar training program run at Monash

University by Australian Science Innovations (ASI), the not-for profit organisation that trains and

manages the team. The training and selection for mathematics and informatics were conducted at

Macquarie University by the not for-profit Australian Mathematics Trust, which administers Australia’s

involvement in the mathematics and informatics programs.
