Electronics is fast track to a great career

Chisholm Frankston trainer Daniel Bodley has given his electronics engineering students a head

start in their careers, by helping them build a fully-functioning electric go-kart capable of speeds of

up to 100kph.

The students – who come from the Certificate II in Electrotechnology and Advanced Diploma in

Electronics and Engineering courses – worked on every aspect of the project and even helped raise

money to complete it.

“Designing and constructing electric vehicles is a cutting edge field closely linked to many of the

emerging green technologies,” Bodley said, “It’s where the automotive industry is heading, for

instance, so a project like this is very worthwhile for the students.”

The lithium-ion powered go-kart has been tested on a local racetrack and was more than able to

hold its own against fuel-driven rivals.

Bodley said that younger students in particular had been able to gain experience from the project

that could transform their life and career.

Through the VET in Schools program, Year 11 and 12 students can complete a Certificate II in

Electrotechnology (Share Technology) at Chisholm, earning themselves a Nationally-recognised

qualification and gaining valuable experience.

“This goes to show the range of experiences you can have through the Certificate II and VET in

Schools,” said Doug McRae, Manager of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at

Chisholm, “It’s a way for young people to get stuck into some real-life electronics projects to see if

they enjoy it.”

McRae said that job prospects in the electronics sector area were exceptionally good at the

moment.

“Electronics is such a diverse field, there’s an astounding number of opportunities out there

currently,” he said, “Our graduates usually have little problem finding work.”

Popular job roles for graduates of the Advanced Diploma include technical officer or electronics

technician. Areas of employment include the microprocessor control system industry, particularly

those areas relating to the design and modification of security and alarm systems.
