Graduating designers deck the shed to celebrate 30th year
Graduating designers from RMIT Universitys prestigious School of Fashion and
Textiles will fill Melbourne Docklands Shed 4 with the fruits of their years of hard
work in weaving, knitting, screen printing and experimental textiles.
The students hail from Moonee Valley, Manningham, Moreland, Melbourne,
Brimbank, Bayside, Stonnington, Caulfield/Glen Eira, Frankston and Tallarook.
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the show is set to be the largest yet as Textile,
Fashion and Footwear Design final-year students join forces for the first time. The
opening night celebration will include a spectacular runway fashion parade.
Since the mid-1970s, the Schools diploma programs have been educating
passionate people, including Liz Williamson, Julie Ryder, Nicky Gabriel, Kyoko
Osato, Ilka White and Kim Simon fibre red, Stephanie Flemming Five
Boroughs, who have since become respected on the Australian design scene.
Fashion and Textiles teacher, Julia Raath, said the Schools Textile Design
diplomas were the most comprehensive programs of their kind in Australia and the
only ones in Melbourne.
They offer students a rigorous technical curriculum and equip them with a design
sensibility that encompasses ancient techniques and an understanding of modern
equipment and tools.
This exhibition runs for a short time only and might be your only chance to see the
imaginative work of Melbournes freshest textile designers.
