Attention: Editor/Chief of Staff
Last chance to nominate for top education awards
Schools, students and parents have until August 22 to nominate their favourite school or
school staff member for the WA Education Awards.
Department of Education and Training Director General Sharyn ONeill said nominees could
win a share in $375,000 in prize money, including $100,000 for the WA Teacher of the Year.
The WA Education Awards are the ultimate thank you for teachers, lecturers, principals and
school staff members, and a terrific boost for public schools leading in Western Australian
education, Ms ONeill said.
High quality teachers, principals, lecturers, school support staff and schools make all the
difference in motivating and inspiring students, and giving them the best possible future.
I am urging you to nominate that person who makes a real difference in your school, or
organise a nomination for your school.
In addition to combining previous awards, such as the WA Principal of the Year and WA
Teacher of the Year, the WA Education Awards contain exciting new categories, such as the
WA School Support Staff Member of the Year.
Categories and winners prizes for individual staff include:
WA Teacher of the Year (metropolitan) $25,000;
WA Teacher of the Year (rural/remote) $25,000;
WA Lecturer of the Year (TAFEWA) $25,000;
WA Principal of the Year $40,000; and
WA School Support Staff Member of the Year $25,000.
The winners of the WA Teacher of the Year (metropolitan), WA Teacher of the Year
(rural/remote) and the WA Lecturer of the Year (TAFEWA) will each go into the running for the
overall $100,000 Premiers Teacher of the Year Award.
Categories for schools include
WA Literacy School of the Year sponsored by the Sunday Times;
WA Numeracy School of the Year sponsored by Teachers Credit Union;
WA Science School of the Year sponsored by ExxonMobil;
WA Innovative School of the Year.
Schools named as state finalists receive $2,500, while each category winner will win $15,000
for their school.

The new whole-school categories in these awards are fantastic because they recognise the
teamwork that goes into making an excellent school, Ms ONeill said.
Meanwhile the individual awards recognise the tremendous effect an individual can have be
it a teacher, lecturer, principal, education assistant, gardener, cleaner or anyone else.
