Murdoch Staff Commence Work Bans Today
SYDNEY, Nov. 19 /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --
Members of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) at Murdoch University today commenced further
protected industrial action which will, if necessary, include them withholding student results. "We regret having
to engage in further industrial action - but the University management has left us no choice," said Dr. Marian
Kemp, NTEU Murdoch Branch Acting President. "We have put processes in place to ensure that students are
not unduly disadvantaged by our actions. The NTEU is being supported by the Murdoch Student Guild as
they understand that having appropriately paid staff with decent working conditions benefits the whole
University community."
The Union has been bargaining for more than a year and NTEU members are taking this further action
solely because of Murdoch Management's lack of commitment to providing them with reasonable salaries and
working conditions.
"We are still hoping that management will sit down and negotiate for the benefit of their staff," Dr. Kemp
said. "However, at present, there is no indication at all that they are listening. Quality staff deserve quality pay
and conditions and we'll carry on with our campaign until Management presents proposals which acknowledge
and respect their staff."
NTEU WA Division Secretary Dr. Lyn Bloom said, "it is unfortunate that Murdoch University Management
could not adopt a cooperative approach in the same way that Edith Cowan University (ECU) Management
had, and negotiate responsibly for their staff. New agreements for ECU staff are now finalised, while Murdoch
Management continues to face further industrial action. NTEU wants to preserve high quality educational
outcomes for Murdoch students and this can only be achieved by Murdoch staff having fair and equitable pay
and working conditions".
