New Start for Traditional Medicine Students
MELBOURNE, Sept. 2 /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --
RMIT University, Melbourne, and the International Medical University, Kuala
Lumpur, will today sign an historic agreement to offer Chiropractic and Chinese
Medicine education together.
Under the agreement, Malaysian students will study for up to three years at IMU
and then spend the second part of their program at RMIT in Melbourne, where they
would also graduate. In IMU, the inaugural intakes for both Chiropractic and
Chinese Medicine are being planned for 2009 in anticipation of approval being
obtained from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
RMIT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, said the arrangement would
offer vast benefits to Malaysian students.
"These students will complete Semester 6 of Bachelor of Applied Science (Chinese
Medicine) qualification at the IMU, before transferring to RMIT for their
Bachelor of Applied Science (Chinese Medicine/Human Biology). Under the
agreement, students wishing to move on to the RMIT program will receive academic
credit for the work they have already done," Professor Gardner said.
"While at RMIT they will study with experts in the field, who are part of the
World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine, based
at our Bundoora campus.
"This will give them access to world-leading staff and researchers. They will
also work with patients in a clinical environment."
In 1996, RMIT became the first public university outside mainland China to offer
a comprehensive undergraduate degree program for training Chinese Medicine
practitioners. More than 300 students have now graduated from the program
enabling them to register and practise in Victoria.
RMIT has the worlds oldest government-supported Chiropractic program, which
started more than 30 years ago.
The University operates teaching clinics in the disciplines which offer services
to the general public.
These clinics provide senior students with direct professional experience of
clinical approaches and procedures, while being fully supervised by qualified
and experienced clinicians.
RMIT is a Global University With Campuses in Vietnam and Partnerships in Hong
Kong, China, Malaysia and Singapore
