NSW Premier's Council on International Education: good start, but $17
billion earner needs a national strategy
The International Education Association Australia (IEAA) welcomes the announcement
by the NSW Government of the formation of a Premier's Council on International
Education.
"In our submission to the NSW Ministerial Taskforce on International Education, IEAA
called for the establishment of an international education authority to focus on
development and support of the industry in NSW" said IEAA President, Stephen
Connelly.
"While details are yet to be released, this is an important first step. IEAA would like to
see more concrete efforts to assist students with their most pressing current concerns,
including awarding transport concessions and assistance with housing issues."
"Overall, however, a nationally coordinated strategy is still lacking.
"IEAA renews its call on federal and state governments to work together to develop a
long term strategy for international education, including at the least a federal
parliamentary secretary for international education to coordinate cross-government
efforts," Mr Connelly said.
International education is Australias third largest export earner, at $17 billion,
employing more than 100,000 people.
