MEDIA RELEASE PR36179
Outstanding Science and Engineering Researchers Graduate from RMIT
MELBOURNE, Sept. 17 /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --
Three outstanding PhD researchers - with fields spanning fighter aircrafts, food, and magnetic bearing
systems - will collect their degrees from RMIT University, Melbourne, at a special ceremony in Kuala Lumpur
on Friday.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Fudge, who will be in Kuala Lumpur for the ceremony, said: "RMIT
excels in applied research and the work of our outstanding PhD researchers will make a lasting contribution to
knowledge, industry and development in the region."
Dr Nusyirwan developed an algorithm based on Evolutionary Programming to investigate optimal solutions
in pursuit - evasion scenarios. These scenarios are common in military conflicts and this new methodology is
able to predict optimal evasive manoeuvres considering the performance limitations of the opponents. The
research includes an analysis on the impact of instruments and sensor errors or inaccuracies. The
methodology has been evaluated for a case of fighter aircraft attacked by a missile, but can be applied to other
scenarios.
Dr Lee has completed a systematic comparative study of the starches from pulse grains. Globally these
grains are staple foods and she has made an important contribution to our understanding of the potential
utilisation of the starches as food ingredients. The research supports a major Australian export industry and
has involved thorough characterisation of the starches. In addition, their unique properties have been
demonstrated along with a range of food processing applications, providing foods which are both appealing
and nutritious.
Dr Mohd Mokhtar has investigated the identification of continuous time linear multi-variable systems using
state-space models. A data-driven approach in realisation by the subspace methods has been carried out in
developing continuous-time models, with the application to an experimental magnetic bearing system.
More than 150 graduands will receive academic awards for their studies completed at RMIT in Melbourne,
Australia, and at the University's partner institutions in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur graduation ceremony.
