MEDIA RELEASE
Outstanding young locals win prizes in global competition
The Australian Mathematics Trust will hold an awards presentation ceremony for the
33rd annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) on Thursday, 11 November 2010 at 5:00pm
at the Holroyd Centre, 17 Miller Street, Merrylands.
Councillor Vasee Rajadurai of Holroyd Council, will present Prize Certificates to the 25 local prize
winners and Prudence Awards to the 50 students who achieved the highest number of consecutive
correct responses in their school.
Awards for Excellence will also be awarded to six students who achieved a perfect score in the
Australian Informatics Competition that tests problem-solving ability using mathematical skills and seeks
to identify computer programming potential in students.
Commencing in 1978, the AMC was the first competition of its kind. It is now the major mathematics
school enrichment event in the South Pacific region and one of the largest of its type in the world. All
students sit the paper on the same day, making it the AMC the largest single event on the Australian
education calendar.
Several hundred thousand students of all levels of ability from schools in more than 40 countries
entered this years Competition. This included Year 3 to Year 12 students from 659 primary and
secondary schools in NSW who sat the competition.
Prizes are awarded to approximately one in every 300 students sitting the AMC in each year group
within each Australian state or country.
Professor Peter Taylor, Executive Director of the not-for-profit Australian Mathematics Trust, said,
Through the AMC and its other mathematical enrichment programs, the Trust aims to foster the
study of mathematics as a means of equipping students to survive and prosper in an increasingly
sophisticated workplace.
It also serves to improve their problem solving capability, learning and understanding in general.
The language of mathematics is international, and the Competitions popularity in so many
countries also demonstrates its transcendence of cultural boundaries and the universal
recognition of its importance.
The University of Canberra is the Trustee and a supporting sponsor of the AMC.
