Singapore Police Force Focus on Forensic Interpreting

MELBOURNE, Aug. 10 /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --

The Singapore Police Force are including professional development workshops specialising in forensic

interpreting as part of their training.

These workshops deal with proper interpretation of prosecution evidence and the impact that one badly

interpreted word can have on the outcome of a case.

Mistakes in interpreting and translating in a multilingual courtroom could potentially be the difference

between life and death.

With an increase in criminal and terrorist acts, intricate and minor details play a large role in a court case.

The Translating and Interpreting program at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, was contracted by the

Singapore Police to provide an in-service to their police interpreters.

Sedat Mülayim, RMIT Lecturer, Master of Social Science (Translating and Interpreting Studies) conducted

the workshops.

Mr Mülayim has worked as a professional interpreter and has had years of experience in legal and police

interpreting, also known as forensic interpreting.

"Police interpreting is a highly specialised field of interpreting, which provides a critical service in these times

of heightened security awareness," Mr Mülayim said.

Mr Mülayim's programs have received enquiries from other parts of Asia and the Middle East.
