SYDNEY’S BEST AND BRIGHTEST STUDENTS

TO COMPETE OVERSEAS FOR OLYMPIC GLORY

Six of the ten students who will represent Australia at the 2009 International Mathematics Olympiad

(IMO) and the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) are from Sydney.  The team members

will be announced at a special ceremony in Parliament House, Canberra, on Wednesday 27 May

when Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, presents

blazers to them and the other Science Olympiad team members.

Part of the annual UNESCO sanctioned International Science Olympiads, the IMO will take place

in Bremen (Germany),10-22 July and the IOI will be held in Plovdiv (Bulgaria), 8-15 August 2009.

Prior to the competition the IMO team will train for a week at Trinity College, Cambridge with the

British Team. Their final training exam will be the official annual competition for the Mathematics

Ashes, currently held by Australia.

Professor Peter Taylor, Executive Director of the Australian Mathematics Trust, which administers

Australia’s involvement in these two Olympiad programs, said, "It is difficult to overestimate the role

of the Olympiads to the “mind-building” process of talented students and its value in refining material

for inclusion in the general curriculum.  The level of workforce education determines a country’s

economic success and these high achievers contribute to future infrastructure by raising the bar”.

The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research provides some funding and the

program is supported by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and the Australian

Mathematical Society.
