Sydney Teenagers Win Three Medals at
International Olympiad in Informatics
Australia's Informatics Olympiad team has won three Bronze Medals at the 21st International
Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from August 8 to 15, 2009.
More than 300 students from 85 countries participated in the annual computer science
competition for secondary school students. The two-day contest includes computer
programming and solving algorithmic problems, with students competing on individual and
team levels.
In order of scores achieved, the medallists who are all from Sydney, are Evgeny
Martynov of James Ruse Agricultural High School (Carlingford), Daniel Berger of
Moriah College (Queens Park) and Kenneth Wong also from James Ruse.
Team Leader was Bernard Blackham, while Deputy Team Leader was David Greenaway,
both from Sydney.
An announcement was also made that hosting of the IOI 2013 has been awarded to Australia.
This will be held in Brisbane on the University of Queensland campus under an arrangement
between the University of Queensland and the Australian Mathematics Trust.
Australias participation in the Informatics Olympiad program is administered by the
not-for-profit Australian Mathematics Trust, based at the University of Canberra.
Trust Executive Director, Professor Peter Taylor, said, "Many of Australia's leading
scientists under the age of about 40 are products of these programs and are serving
their country in science in areas such as climate change and defence."
The Australian Government provides significant support through its Department of
Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR). The Australian Computer
Society provides further assistance.
IOI patrons are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation
(UNESCO) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The
Honorary Patron of IOI 2009 was Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.
