University of Sydney Union Team takes out the
World Debating Championships in Turkey
Sydney University debaters edge out Harvard, Oxford and
London School of Economic to win the ‘Ashes’ of Debating

The University of Sydney Union’s USU Debating Team has won the 2010 World Titles, held in
Turkey.
The USU Team defeated Oxford, Harvard and the London School of Economics to win the World
Universities Debating Championship finals held in Antalya, the Ashes of debating.
The USU ‘A’ Team, Chris Croke and Steve Hind, won the competition which is the largest
debating tournament on the planet and is based on the British Parliamentary Debate Format.
“We are absolutely elated at the result, particularly against such strong competition with 1050
participants from 240 universities around the globe”, said Steve Hind.
‘It was a tough competition however we put up a very strong team backed up at every step of the
way by the University of Sydney Union.
“The USU team is very proud to have done so well and we congratulate all our members” added
Contingent Captain, Chris Croke.
Three of the USU’s speakers made it to the Top 10 with Steve Hind ranked No.2 in the world,
Chris Croke No.5 and Tim Moony No.8.
“This is a terrific achievement and shows why the University of Sydney Union’s Debating Team is
ahead of any other in the world including Oxford, Cambridge and the entire Ivy League”, said USU
President Pat Bateman
“The “Worlds” is the pre-eminent debating tournament on the calendar and competing are
the strongest debating teams in the world”, he said.
“USU is extremely proud that our team has represented not only the University but Australia at
such a high level”, said USU CEO Paul McJannett.
