Expert comment on youth conscription
Former national servicemen have called for a modern version of youth
conscription, focused on community and voluntary work, to combat street violence
among young people.
Professor Judith Bessant, Head of RMIT Universitys Youth Work Program, said
the call from retired colonel George Mackenzie failed to recognise that young
people were already highly dedicated to volunteer work.
Research consistently shows that young Australians are strongly committed to
volunteering and spend many hours doing community service without any financial
incentive, Professor Bessant said.
If we are serious about combating street violence then we need to begin by
respecting young people and acknowledging their very real contribution to this
country.
We need to do something about the serious hurdles in employment and housing
for example that are faced by young people looking to assume adult
responsibilities.
We also need to reflect on ourselves and on the mixed messages we send young
people through the values expressed by our communities, in the media and
through our own behaviour.
In a culture where too many adults routinely mix alcohol with speed and violence,
its hardly fair for us to critique young people who observe that kind of conduct.
Professor Bessants research interests include ethical conduct towards young
people and the just treatment of youth in Australia.
She has made significant contributions to youth policy, via government taskforces
and her own research papers.
Professor Bessant is available for comment on calls for the return of youth
conscription.
