Manpower – Melbourne Institute Monthly Employment Report

July  2008

Thursday’s ABS jobs data expected to show good

growth in trend employment despite concerns on the

economy.

Despite the negative reports showing a slowdown in other key economic

indicators, the Manpower – Melbourne Institute Monthly Employment Report

predicted that growth in trend employment (persons) for Australia would reach

2.3 per cent in July, followed by 2.1 per cent in August and 2.0 per cent in

September. This suggests that growth in trend employment will be about 6 700

more persons are likely to have been employed for July, of which around 3 200

are males and 3 500 are females.

According to Stephen Hinch, General Manager Marketing & Communications

Manpower Services (Australia) Pty Ltd, “the report suggests that contractions in

the number of persons employed are most likely to be in Victoria and Western

Australia.”

“This continuing steady growth is also reflective of the demand that our

Manpower Employment Outlook Survey has forecast for the coming months.

Despite the slow down in some areas, there is still a continuing need for

business to hire new workers and this is reflecting a good but slower demand

until at least the end of 2008 with around 20 percent of companies having jobs

on offer.

There is a level of growth in real numbers for all states, with Western Australia

and Victoria showing the most signs of softening, but in the case of Western

Australia this is more a pressure of candidate supply rather than demand.

Tasmania shows the highest potential growth in percentage terms while other

states a forecast to be business as usual.” Hinch noted.
