AUSTRALIA’S NEW CITIZENS TO ENROL ON AUSTRALIA DAY

On Australia Day, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will be assisting new Australian

citizens to enrol to vote at citizenship ceremonies throughout Tasmania.

“AEC staff find that new Australian citizens welcome the opportunity to enrol to vote and

participate in our democracy” said Damian Read, Divisional Office Manager for Denison.

New Australian citizens will be provided with an electoral enrolment form at the ceremony.  AEC

staff will be in attendance to collect these and provide information on Australia’s electoral

system.

“Thousands of new citizens enrolled to vote at Australia Day citizenship ceremonies around

Australia in 2009 and once again our staff will be attending these ceremonies so that all

participants are able to complete and lodge their forms on the day” said Damian.

“Citizenship ceremonies are an opportune time for new citizens to enrol because AEC staff in

attendance can assist them to complete the form and provide advice about electoral matters.

This is particularly relevant now, as Tasmania will have a close of rolls soon for the upcoming

state election where many new citizens will be voting for the first time.”

To enrol to vote or update your details you must complete an electoral enrolment form.

available at any Australia Post outlet, Medicare, Centrelink, or Australian Taxation Office,

selected Rural Transaction Centres, as well as at any AEC office.

The AEC website at www.aec.gov.au also has information translated into 29 languages and

telephone numbers for the telephone interpreter service.  To find out more information, you can

also telephone the AEC on 13 23 26.

Note:  A photo opportunity exists at the ceremonies below, where the AEC will be in attendance

enrolling new citizens.  AEC enrolment will be commencing 15 minutes prior to the start time of the
