Discussing race relations via art

Out of Order is an exciting visual event that will provide an opportunity to have an

ongoing discussion about race relations in Australia via art. The event takes place

on Monday, 22 February, at The Order of Melbourne club and includes a range of

films by RMIT University staff, students and alumni.

Festival Curator, John Harding, says it will allow artists to be proactive about the

ongoing discussion about race relations in Australia.

“The films range from comedy through to more serious content, but they all have

interesting and provocative things to say.

“The event will showcase what artists do best, making art that speaks about the

world they live in. This is art initiating self-representation and standing up to be

counted in this ongoing debate, rather than being submissive to it,” he said.

Films being screened on the night include:

Ngananmpa manta and Fitzroy Stars: More than a game by John Harding

I don’t want to be a dole bludger by Destiny Deacon

The Opportunists by Daniel King

Whitewash by Emma Barrow

Strand and Heat by Dominic Redfern

Developed between RMIT, through the School of Art and the Office of Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander Studies, and The Order of Melbourne club, the event will

raise money towards the placement of an Indigenous Artist in Residence at RMIT

School of Art this year.

The Artist in Residence program gives both staff and students at RMIT connection

to the larger arts industry. Artists are usually from a different background or culture

and offer a different perspective on art, which often results in exciting cross-

pollination of ideas and forms.

Out of Order will also include a performance by The Liz Cavanagh Band, during

the interval and after the film screenings.
