MEDIA RELEASE

Tuesday 10 November 2009

MEDIA EVENT: JACK THOMPSON AM AND CAROLINE

CARROLL SPEAK ABOUT FORGOTTEN AUSTRALIANS AND

THE FORTHCOMING APOLOGY

A media conference will be held on WEDNESDAY 11 NOVEMBER at 3pm in the Coles

Room at the State Library of NSW, Macquarie Street, Sydney.

Jack Thompson AM (patron) and Caroline Carroll (Chair) of the Alliance for Forgotten

Australians (AFA) will speak and take questions.

Jack Thompson AM is one of Australia’s leading actors and the host of television show,

Find My Family. Jack spent some time in out-of-home care as a child before finding a

new family through adoption. Jack understands the significance of the loss of family. He

is a patron of AFA.

Caroline Carroll grew up in care, spending time in five institutions and at least as many

foster care situations. She now works with Forgotten Australians in Victoria. She is the

Chair of AFA. Caroline has been appointed to Minister Jenny Macklin's Advisory Group

to assist in developing the apology to Forgotten Australians.

The Alliance for Forgotten Australians is holding this conference to:

increase community awareness of this part of Australia’s history;

draw attention to the Apology to be issued by the PM on Monday 16 November

and the reasons for it;

educate the public about the lasting effects of childhood abuse and the issues

faced by Forgotten Australians today;

advocate for the ongoing needs of the survivors to be met.

The apology will satisfy the first recommendation of two Senate reports, acknowledging

publicly

the nation's sorrow for the neglect, abuse and ongoing pain experienced by

adult survivors of childhood abuse while in institutional or foster care in the last Century.

Many more recommendations remain to be implemented.

For further information, contact Caroline Carroll on 03 9094 3527 or 0438 460 184 or the

AFA Secretariat on 02 6273 4885 or 0407 343 741.
