Jessica Watson’s Homecoming voted
Australia’s Favourite Event of the Year
Teen sailor Jessica Watson’s Homecoming into Sydney Harbour has been voted by the Australian
people as Australia’s Favourite Event of the year, with over 64,000 people voting in a new online
competition as part of the 2010 Australian Event Awards.
After her epic 210 day solo voyage around the world in her pink yacht, Jessica returned home to
a hero’s welcome on Saturday 15th May 2010, greeted by hundreds of thousands of cheering fans
at the Opera House and a swarms of boats crowding Sydney Harbour.
“To win such a prestigious award like this is such an honour. It really was an amazing day and I
was so overwhelmed when I sailed into Sydney Harbour. It was breathtaking to see so many
support vessels and people all around the Harbour and Sydney Opera House. It was a day I will
treasure for the rest of my life and clearly a lot of other people must have felt the same way by
voting for my event,” said Jessica Watson.
“Jessica Watson’s homecoming was truly an event that stopped the nation, whether people were
actually at the event in Sydney or one of the millions watching live on television. So many
Australians had followed her journey around the world and we were all so proud to see her the
moment she sailed into the harbour,” said Sandy Hollway co-chair of the judges in the Australian
Event Awards.
this new online competition provides an opportunity for people to support their most loved
events and learn about all the other great festivals, marathons, charity fundraisers and more
happening around Australia each year.
While thousands of Australians voted for Jessica’s Homecoming, other events proving popular
with the public were the Sydney Royal Easter Show, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Sydney’s world
famous New Years Eve Fireworks display and Australia’s premier pet event, the Million Paws
Walk.
Jessica Watson would like to thank Events NSW, the NSW Government, ONE HD and her
dedicated team at 5 Oceans Media who worked hard to stage this multimillion dollar event.
