MEDIA BRIEFING NOTE FOR THE FUNERAL OF NYOONGAR LEADER,

KEN COLBUNG MBE OAM JP

The funeral for respected Nyoongar Leader, Ken Colbung MBE OAM JP (78) will be held

today between 3pm and 5pm at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park, Whitfords Avenue,

Padbury.

Family representative Irene Stainton (Mr Colbung’s niece) will be available to speak to any

media representatives after the funeral but has indicated she would rather not be

interviewed prior to the service.

Other requests from the family

Please do not take pictures of the immediate family in grieving as they enter or

inside the Chapel.

Family members will be among a number of speakers at the service. Irene Stainton is

happy to be recorded.  The other family member will be the final speaker.

Vision and still photography

One camera from Channel 10 will be allowed at the back of the Chapel service and

will make available vision to all television stations.

The family has also given permission for one photographer to be permitted access to

the back of the Chapel.

The service

The family will arrive at the side entrance in the official procession.  They have

requested that vision of direct family members is not recorded.

The proceedings will include a photographic tribute celebrating Mr Colbung’s life,

however the family is not making it available to the media and asks that it not be

recorded.

Reporting

The reporting of this funeral service and images of Mr Colbung mean that a warning

in the newsreader introduction that some images may offend some Aboriginal

Australians would be appropriate.

It’s requested that media inquiries are directed through Marie Mills on 9228 1999 or

0418 918 202 or Vicki Brett on 0403 958 286.
