Tomorrow: ABS and AIHW publication launch - The Health and Welfare of Australias
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2008
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)
will be celebrating the release of the publication The Health and Welfare of Australias Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2008 at a function in Sydney tomorrow (29 April).
The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, The Hon. Jenny
Macklin, MP will be the keynote speaker. Also speaking will be Professor Sandra Eades, Australias
first Aboriginal medical doctor to be awarded a PhD (for her investigation of the health of Aboriginal
women and children in the Perth area). Sandra was also 2006 NSW Woman of the Year.
The Health and Welfare of Australias Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2008 (cat. no.
4704.0) is a joint venture between the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Institute of Health
and Welfare.
It provides a comprehensive statistical overview, largely at the national level, of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander health and welfare. The publication draws together a wide range of information from
demographic and population characteristics to housing circumstances; maternal and child health;
health risk factors; health status; disability; mortality; and access to, and use of, services.
