MEDIA RELEASE

24 December 2009

KEEP SAFE DURING BUSY CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS

Motorists are being reminded to plan ahead and take extra care while driving these

Christmas and New Year holidays.

An RTA spokesperson said careful driving is critical across the NSW road network during

the Christmas holidays when traffic numbers are at their peak.

“Motorists are about to enter the busiest time of the year on NSW roads traffic when

volumes on all major highways are expected to be at their highest on Christmas Day,

Boxing Day and Sunday 27 December,” the spokesperson said.

“The RTA wants all motorists to enjoy a safe Christmas and to take care, obey the road

rules, drive safely and have regular breaks if travelling long distances.”

The spokesperson said there would be Driver Reviver sites and rest facilities available

throughout the holiday period and work on all major road sites would be kept to a

minimum.

“There are more than 1400 rest areas and Driver Reviver sites across NSW for people to

stop, rest and stretch their legs.

“At the Driver Reviver sites volunteers will hand out 250,000 cups of tea and coffee and

more than 400,000 biscuits during the holidays.

“The vast majority of road work sites will be closed during the break. Work on the Inner

West Busway will continue from late December.

“Regardless of whether a work site is open or closed, the RTA is reminding travellers there

are changed traffic conditions and motorists must follow any road signs, including work site

speed limits.

Travellers are also being reminded that double demerit points are now in force.

“Double demerit points are now being enforced for all speeding and seatbelt offences

through to 3 January 2010 inclusive,” the spokesperson said.

“Motorists need to take responsibility for their actions. Double demerit points help to get

the message across that speeding, driving without a seatbelt or riding a motorcycle without

a helmet will not be tolerated.”

The RTA is also reminding motorists of changed traffic conditions throughout Sydney for

Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Clearways are already in place throughout the CBD including Elizabeth, Bridge, King,

Market and York streets and will continue through until New Year’s Day.

Motorists should check signs before parking as vehicles parked in special event

clearways will be towed and fines apply.

There will be additional taxi ranks on Elizabeth York and Lang streets during the holiday

period.
