MEDIA RELEASE
23 NOVEMBER
PACIFIC HIGHWAY HANK ST, HEATHERBRAE
The RTA is proposing to install traffic lights at the intersection of the Pacific Highway
and Hank Street, Heatherbrae, to improve safety for motorists.
An RTA spokesperson said $500,000 had been provided by the Federal Government
under the Nation Building Program to improve safety and traffic flow at this
intersection.
The new traffic lights are in response to the crash history at this location which
meets National Blackspot criteria, the spokesperson said.
There have been seven crashes within 50 metres of the intersection between 2003
and 2007, with four of the crashes involving injury.
The new lights will especially improve safety for motorists turning right out of Hank
Street onto the Highway.
The proposal also improves pedestrian safety with the provision of pedestrian
crossings on all three legs of the intersection which will be controlled by the lights.
There will also be a footpath from the bus stop south of the intersection to one of the
crossings at the lights.
The RTA has issued a community update and the community is invited to comment
on the proposal. Comments close on 18 December 2009.
