ROAD SAFETY PROJECTS IN THE HUNTER
An RTA spokesperson said the NSW Government had provided $84,000 to fund anti-
speeding road safety projects at the local government level in the Hunter region.
Speeding is the single largest cause of road fatalities. Between 2004 and 2008, 177
people were killed and more than 3,600 injured in road crashes in the Hunter region.
NSW Centre for Road Safety Director, Dr Soames Job, said speeding was a factor in
37 per cent of all road fatalities in NSW.
Too many people are still speeding. Our message to the community is simple slow
down and stick to the speed limit.
There is no such thing as safe speeding. The safe way to get to your destination
safely is to stick to the speed limit, Dr Job said.
The RTA spokesperson said this years road toll is almost 25 per cent higher than at
the same time last year and that is why the NSW Government had announced as a
result of the Road Safety Roundtable - a 30 point action plan to tackle the states
rising road toll.
The 30 point action plan includes increasing the number of highway patrol officers
and deploying them in known black spots; including road safety messages in
speeding infringement notices; new hard line sanctions for high level speeding
offences; pedestrian safety improvements; and reviewing and developing road safety
messages.
The $84,000 road safety funding in the Hunter will go to eight councils, the
spokesperson said.
It includes money for roadside electronic speed advisory message boards which tell
motorists how fast they are driving and whether they are driving above the speed limit
and an awareness campaign about local speed issues.
