MEDIA RELEASE
18 OCTOBER 2010

IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR
NSW MOTORISTS SELLING A VEHICLE

The RTA is launching an educational campaign to remind motorists selling a vehicle
to update ownership details as soon as possible after a sale.

Motorists seem to be unaware that if they do not update the vehicle ownership
details as soon as possible, they can be held responsible for driving or parking
offences committed by the new owner until the new owner registers the vehicle into
their name, an RTA spokesperson said.

Only a small number of NSW motorists remember to complete a Notice of Disposal
when they sell or dispose of a vehicle.

It is free for motorists to submit a Notice of Disposal.  This can be done in a variety
of ways, but the quickest and easiest way is by logging onto the myRTA.com
website.

It is the responsibility of the seller to tell the RTA when they sell or dispose of their
vehicle, by submitting a Notice of Disposal, the spokesperson said.

To complete a Notice of Disposal, a seller will need to provide information about
themselves such as licence details; the vehicle being sold such as date of sale and
sale price; and the person buying the vehicle, including their licence number and
surname.

The RTA offers customers a range of online services through myRTA.com, including
access to demerit point balances, vehicle history check and registration renewal
services.
