MEDIA RELEASE

29 January 2010

$1.5 MILLION UPGRADE WORK ON CLEVELAND STREET

The RTA will be carrying out $1.5 million in road improvement work to Cleveland Street, Surry

Hills.

An RTA spokesperson said Cleveland Street is used by more than 50,000 in some locations so

these improvements are going to benefit a lot of people.

“The work involves resurfacing the road in areas, heavy patching, kerb and gutter repairs,

replacing guardrails and linemarking,” the RTA spokesperson said.

These improvements will bring real benefits to motorists and bus commuters.

“This work will provide a smoother, more durable road surface combined with the gutter and

drainage improvements will improve safety,” the RTA spokesperson said.

Some tree trimming has already been carried out.

Work is scheduled to start Monday 8 February 2010 and take about three weeks to complete,

weather permitting.

To minimise traffic disruptions the RTA is advising motorists work will be done at night from

Monday to Thursday from 10pm to 5am.  Detours will be in place.

Up to date information regarding road closures and detours will also be displayed on electronic

message signs and access to residences/businesses will be maintained at all times.

There will be noise associated with this work, however every effort will be made to minimise the

impact of noise on residents.

During this work motorists are asked to follow the signs, including detours and reduced speed

limits, and to follow the direction of traffic controllers. Minor delays are expected due to the

changed traffic conditions.

The RTA is reminding motorists to be road work aware, slow down and take care – road work

speed limits are enforceable

The RTA appreciates the patience of residents and motorists while it completes these

improvements.
