MEDIA RELEASE

  29 JANUARY 2010

IMPROVING SAFETY ON THE PRINCES

HIGHWAY AT NOWRA

Work will

start on Sunday 31 January

to install new screens on the Princes

Highway at Nowra to improve safety at this busy location.

An RTA spokesperson said the new safety screens on

the Jane Street bridge over

the Princes Highway will improve safety and stop people from throwing rocks and

other objects off the bridge and on to the traffic below on the Princes Highway.

“Throwing rocks off the Jane Street pedestrian bridge is very dangerous for the

motorists driving below on the highway and can cause serious incidents.

“Work has already started to remove two trees next to the bridge so the safety

screens can be installed.

“Motorists will still be able to travel on the bridge under traffic control measures, but

may experience some minor delays.

“Motorists will still have access to the Stocklands shopping centre via the

southbound lane on the Princes Highway.

“The bridge will be closed to pedestrians for around three months.  During

this

time, pedestrians will be able to cross at the traffic lights at the intersection of

Worrigee Street and the Princes Highway.

“We appreciate the patience of motorists while this important work is carried out,”

the spokesperson said.

The work is expected to be completed by June this year, weather permitting.
