December 2009

INNER WEST BUSWAY STAGE ONE OPENING

The first stage of the Inner West Busway through Rozelle from Terry Street to The

Crescent is almost complete and will start operating on Monday 14 December.

“The citybound left lane will operate as a bus lane from 6am to 10am on weekdays when

there will be three all-traffic lanes and one right turn lane into Darling Street,” an RTA

Spokesperson said.

“At other times there will be three all-traffic lanes and two turn right lanes into Darling

Street.

“This is the first part of the $175 million Inner West Busway along Victoria Road through

Drummoyne and Rozelle.

“Work is continuing on the new bridge over Iron Cove and roadwork has started on the

final stage of the project through Drummoyne, with the median strip being removed to

enable the introduction of a tidal flow scheme to facilitate the morning peak bus lane.

“Residents and motorists in Rozelle will see overhead signs to help motorists drive in the

correct lanes. The signs will be tested at night in the week before the bus lane opens.

“New lane markings will also be painted on the road surface from Saturday 12 December.

“Motorists are reminded that bus lanes can only be used by buses, taxis, hire cars,

motorcycles, bicycles, emergency vehicles and special purpose vehicles.

“Other traffic is allowed to use a bus lane for up to 100 metres to turn in and out of side

roads, enter or leave properties or pass a vehicle which has stopped to turn right or to

avoid an obstruction.

“Fines and demerit points apply for illegal use of a bus lane and enforcement cameras will

be installed in the Drummoyne section of the Inner West Busway when that section is

completed next year.

“When it is completed in early 2011, the Inner West Busway project will improve public

transport along Victoria Road by creating a dedicated bus lane in the morning and

afternoon weekday peaks.
