ITSRR Releases Annual Report 2008-09

The Independent Transport Safety and Reliability Regulator (ITSRR) today released its Annual Report 2008-09.

ITSRR Chief Executive, Len Neist, said the report tabled in the New South Wales Parliament today highlighted a number of achievements that contributed to the safety and reliability of the state's transport services.

"One of the most important achievements was the successful commencement of Rail Safety Act 2008, which implements the national model rail safety legislation in NSW," Mr Neist said.

"This new Act provides much clearer expectations on rail transport operators to ensure they provide safe services to the people of NSW.

"ITSRR has been working closely with the rail industry after introduction of the new Act to help organisations understand and fulfill their obligations," Mr Neist added.

Other highlights from the ITSRR Annual Report 2008-09 include:

* an integrated strategy - including inspections and audits, data collection and analysis and education activities - to improve the safe working conditions for rail track workers
* advice provided on the impacts of the 2009 CityRail timetable using a unique new passenger load model
* targeted safety inspection program to monitor rail transport operators' application of engineering safety standards for rail infrastructure and rolling stock
* analysis of effective forms of safety upgrades for level crossings to inform funding priorities throughout NSW
* conducted research for the annual CityRail customer satisfaction survey and designed a new survey of Sydney metropolitan bus users
* provided advice to the government on development of new purchasing contracts for commuter rail and ferry services.
