Media Alert
Pram Safety on Trains
11.00am
Wednesday 14 October 2009
Platform 1 West
Flinders Street
Station
Kidsafe and Connex have
issued a RED ALERT over an
alarming number of potentially serious
incidents involving children and babies in prams travelling on trains including:
unrestrained babies spilling from prams falling between the train and platform
runaway prams in high winds after being left with their brakes off
pram front swivel wheels getting caught in the gap between train and platform
children becoming separated from parents at stations
Kidsafe and Connex will demonstrate some of the problems being experienced to highlight the
need for vigilance on trains and at
stations. Three wheel prams are of particular concern, where
the swivelling front wheel can be caught between the train and platform.
Dr Mark Stokes, President of Kidsafe Victoria said we are also concerned about parents who leave
their babies and toddlers unrestrained in prams whilst travelling on trains and getting on and off the
train. This leaves the child vulnerable to serious injuries if they fall from the pram.
