KLUGER GAINS 5-STAR SAFETY RATING

One of Australia’s top selling family 4 wheel drives, the Toyota Kluger, has received a 5-star

safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program – Australia’s leading

independent vehicle safety advocate.

The Kluger received a 5-star rating following a series of crash tests under ANCAP’s

independent testing regime.

These published tests demonstrate the relative crash

performance of the model against a set of specific criteria.

ANCAP also announced safety ratings for a range of other vehicles on the Australian

market: the Citroen C5 (5 stars); VW Caddy Van (4 stars with side airbags); Holden

Colorado 2-wheel drive (3 stars); Holden Colorado 4-wheel drive (3 stars); Holden Epica (4

stars); Hyundai Getz 1.6 SX 5-door (4 stars with Protectz safety pack, 3 stars without);

Renault Koleos (5 stars); and Mercedes M Class (5 stars with knee airbag).

ANCAP Chairman, Lauchlan McIntosh, in releasing the results said: “The 5-star rating

results demonstrate that the automotive industry is increasingly producing cars where

occupants are much less likely to be injured in crashes, but it is disappointing that some

cars are not meeting world best practice and are only rated as three stars.”

The Kluger provides a range of safety features as standard right across its range, including

dual front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic

brake distribution, electronic stability control, a rear view camera and seat belt reminders.

ANCAP expressed disappointment at the Kluger’s poor 1-star pedestrian rating.  Mr

McIntosh said that pedestrian crash test ratings could be dramatically improved and noted

that Toyota had advised it was now designing its vehicles with the aim of meeting the new

Global Technical Regulation on pedestrian protection for future production models.

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, all Australian state

governments, the New Zealand government, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission,

NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
