MEDIA RELEASE

21 December 2009

AGREEMENT MEANS M5 MOTORWAY EXPANSION

MOVING AHEAD

The proposed expansion of the M5 Corridor received a boost today with news that the RTA has

signed an agreement with Interlink Roads to develop its proposal to widen section one of the

M5 Corridor Expansion – the M5 South West motorway.

An RTA spokesperson said under the agreement the RTA and the M5 West operators will

develop the proposal to widen the M5 south west motorway between Camden Valley Way and

King Georges Road from two to three lanes in each direction.

“This is a significant milestone for the entire M5 Corridor Expansion proposal,” the

spokesperson said. “Under this agreement the RTA and Interlink will develop a concept design,

cost estimates and produce a funding plan for the government to consider.  The environmental

assessment will also proceed in the new year”

“Sydney is continuing to change and grow and we need to make sure NSW infrastructure is able

to cope with future transport demand,” the spokesperson said.

“Around 95,000 vehicles use this corridor each day and this agreement will allow the RTA to

further progress planning for expanding section one of this major arterial road.”

The NSW Government expects the expansion of the M5 corridor will result in more than $6

billion in economic benefits through travel time savings in a 30 year period.

“An expansion of the entire M5 corridor would relieve pressure on the busy corridor and it

would also create about 2,000 direct jobs, and around 8,000 indirect jobs, during the life of the

work,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the community consultation on the M5 Corridor Expansion has started

and would be extensive and ongoing.

“Community consultation on this project is extremely important and will continue before and

during the environmental assessments,” the spokesperson said.

“The RTA has just started an 18 month consultative period and no final decision about the M5

Corridor Expansion will be made without the community’s input.

“It’s important for the community to have a say on this proposal and the RTA is encouraging

everyone to have a look at it and provide their feedback,” the spokesperson said.
