Major works on the M1 freeway this weekend
Weekend works will resume along the M1 corridor this weekend from Warrigal Road to the
West Gate Bridge as works proceed on the $1.39 billion M1 upgrade.
Project Director for the M1 upgrade, John Cunningham, said major delays were expected
on the West Gate Freeway heading eastbound between West Gate Bridge and the CityLink
Tunnels this weekend from 8pm Friday 6 November to 5am Monday 9 November 2009.
He said those attending the final day of the racing at Flemington were advised to catch
public transport, or if driving, to expect some delays on the Monash Freeway and to seek an
alternative route other than the West Gate Freeway, when returning home.
We are resuming our works again this weekend in full swing to get as much work done as
possible to take advantage of the good weather, he said.
Traffic from the West Gate and Bolte Bridges heading towards the CityLink Tunnels and
Kings Way will be affected by works and temporary traffic conditions will be in place while
these works are underway, he said.
Motorists are advised that only three lanes of traffic will be available on the West Gate
Freeway heading east. Significant delays are expected and drivers are strongly encouraged
to avoid the area, he said.
Mr Cunningham said there would also be lane closures on the Monash Freeway and
CityLink on Saturday between the tunnels and Glenferrie Road and between High Street
and Warrigal Road in both directions to undertake resurfacing works.
We expect there will be some delays from these lane closures, so if drivers choose to take
the freeway they should leave a little early and allow extra time to get to their destination,
he said.
Mr Cunningham said on Sunday when works resumed there would be double lane closures
on the Monash Freeway and on CityLink.
We will have variable message signs on the road advising motorists where the lane
closures are so they can make the choice to exit the freeway or expect delays.
Mr Cunningham said the works that would continue up until Christmas on the M1 corridor
would include both resurfacing works and the replacement of expansion joints on the West
Gate Freeway.
We continue to thank Melbourne motorists for their patience while we continue the works
on one of the States busiest roads and we advise them to take care when travelling in
construction zones for their own safety and the safety of workers, he said.
