Major works on the Monash and West Gate Freeways this weekend
Weekend works will continue along the M1 corridor this weekend from South Gippsland
Freeway to the West Gate Bridge as works proceed on the $1.39 billion M1 upgrade.
Project Director for the M1 upgrade, John Cunningham, said major delays were expected
on the Monash Freeway between High Street and Warrigal Road on Saturday and Sunday
as more resurfacing works were completed.
He said that in addition to works on the freeway there would also be closures to the
Warrigal Road entry and exit ramps over the weekend due to resurfacing.
The Warrigal Road inbound entry and outbound exit ramps will be closed on Saturday
night at 8pm through to Monday morning.
Motorists expecting to use the Warrigal Road exit to head to the JB Were Australian
Masters Golf at Kingston Heath on Sunday could use the Burke Road, High Street or
Forster Road exits.
With lane closures between High Street and Warrigal Road, motorists heading to the golf
over the weekend should look at alternative routes to the Monash Freeway or consider
using public transport to get to Kingston Heath. Metlink has advised special shuttle buses
will travel to and from Moorabbin and Huntingdale stations to Kingston Heath Golf Club
departing every five minutes, he said.
Mr Cunningham said the works on the West Gate Freeway during the weekend would be
similar to those carried out last weekend and would affect motorists heading eastbound
between West Gate Bridge and the CityLink Tunnels from 8pm tonight to 5am Monday 9
November 2009.
Traffic from the West Gate and Bolte Bridges heading towards the CityLink Tunnels and
Kings Way will be affected by works and temporary traffic conditions will be in place while
these works are underway, he said.
Motorists are advised that only three lanes of traffic will be available on the West Gate
Freeway heading east. Significant delays are expected and drivers are strongly encouraged
to avoid the area, he said.
We expect there will be some delays from these lane closures, so if drivers choose to take
the freeway they should leave a little early and allow extra time to get to their destination,
he said.
We will have variable message signs on the road advising motorists where the lane
closures are so they can make the choice to exit the freeway or expect delays.
Mr Cunningham said the works that would continue up until Christmas on the M1 corridor
would include both resurfacing works and the replacement of expansion joints on the West
Gate Freeway with further works continuing in the New Year on the West Gate Freeway
and SouthernLink.
We would like to thank Melbourne motorists for their continuing patience while we
continue the works on one of the States busiest roads and we advise them to take care
when travelling in construction zones for their own safety and the safety of workers, he
said.
