VACC Vehicle Safety Campaign
VACC, the peak Automotive Industry body in Victoria, is campaigning against unsafe
vehicles on Victorias roads.
Over the next three weeks, VACC will run advertorials calling on Government to do
more about vehicle safety. VACC has repeated its call to Goverment to help educate
motorists about the importance of a well maintained and regularly serviced vehicle.
What: VACC Vehicle Safety Campaign.
Where: Herald Sun newspaper
When: Monday November 9, Monday November 16 & Monday November 23 2009
Who: VACC, the peak Automotive Industry body in Victoria. VACC has more than
5500 members, employing some 50,000 employees in the automotive retail sector.
VACC is the only organisation collecting vehicle safety data.
Background: VACC research shows one-in-four vehicles in Victoria is unsafe. 28%
of vehicles in the State have failed a basic check of the key safety aspects of a
vehicle brakes, tyres, lights, steering and restraints.
VACC applauds campaigns which tackle driver behaviour and other road safety
messages, but none have focused on vehicle safety and maintenance. A vehicle with
worn tyres, broken lights and faulty brakes is a risk, regardless of its ANCAP safety
rating.
Victoria Police estimate 100 road deaths last year involved drivers on work related
matters. Vehicle Safety also applies to company cars or commercial vehicles as they
are deemed workplaces, and as such, health and safety regulations apply. Managers
and drivers have a responsibility to ensure the work vehicle they are driving is safe
and well maintained.
