MEDIA RELEASE

MORE EDUCATION FOR HEAVY VEHICLE DRIVERS
NEWELL HIGHWAY RIVERINA
The RTA will visit truck rest stops along the Newell Highway as part of a public education
campaign to increase the profile of heavy vehicle enforcement activities.
An RTA spokesperson
said truck stop visits will be held at Jerilderie on 17 and
18 December and at West Wyalong in early 2010.
This is an important initiative that will give heavy vehicle drivers an opportunity to discuss
road safety from a compliance and behavioural perspective.
Inspectors from the South West Vehicle Regulations team and a project officer from the
South West Road User Safety unit will work together at the southern end of the Newell
Highway to consult with heavy vehicle drivers about a range of road safety issues,
including speeding, driver fatigue, drink driving and overloading of vehicles.
In April 2009, the State Government provided additional funding for police and heavy
vehicle inspectors to address issues such as unsafe driving and unsafe vehicles on the
highway as one of the outcomes of the Newell Highway Safety Review.
The overall objective of the review is to reduce the incidence and severity of road
crashes on the Newell Highway.
Programs in the next three years include road works to address alignment, shoulder and
intersection issues and to reduce the potential for head-on crashes.
Public education and enforcement programs on the route will also play an important road
safety role.
I encourage heavy vehicle drivers to take advantage of the opportunity to talk with RTA
staff at the upcoming consultation days on the Newell Highway, the spokesperson said.
