MEDIA RELEASE

16 December 2009

PITTWATER ROAD AND BARRENJOEY ROAD

PEDESTRIAN FENCE AND CROSSING

Pedestrian fences and a new crossing will be installed on Pittwater Road and

Barrenjoey Road, Mona Vale, after the RTA investigated concerns about pedestrians

crossing the road at unsafe locations.

An RTA spokesperson said the decision to install pedestrian fences in three separate

locations on Barrenjoey Road and Pittwater Road between Mona Vale Road and

Park Street had not been taken lightly.

“This is a busy road used extensively by both motorists and pedestrians,” the

RTA

spokesperson said.

“Pedestrians are unfortunately crossing the road at unsafe locations which is causing

significant safety concerns.

“There have been five pedestrian crashes on Pittwater and Barrenjoey roads

between Mona Vale Road and Park Street between 2003 to 2007.

“This is a high crash rate and the RTA needs to act to improve safety for everyone

using these roads,” the spokesperson said.

The RTA has consulted with the community about the project.

The RTA will be installing:

170m of fencing on Pittwater Road starting from north of Mona Vale Road

160m of fencing on Barrenjoey Road north of Pittwater Road to south of Park

Street

50m of fencing on the corner of Barrenjoey Road and Park Street between the

bus stop on Barrenjoey Road and the Mona Vale Hotel driveway on Park Street.

“After listening to suggestions by the community the RTA will also be installing a

new

pedestrian crossing at the existing traffic lights to help pedestrians safely cross

Pittwater Road at its intersection with Mona Vale Road, on the south side of the

intersection.

“The installation of a pedestrian crossing on this busy road will provide pedestrians

with a safe crossing point and will mean motorists are more aware of pedestrians on

the road.

“About 30 per cent of the people killed on Sydney roads each year are pedestrians.

Of those killed or injured, children and older pedestrians are the most vulnerable,” the

spokesperson said.

The work on is scheduled to start in February 2010

and will take about

six weeks to

complete, weather permitting.

Around 3,300 letters will be distributed to residents and businesses in the area to

advise them of the changes to the project, which now includes the addition of the

pedestrian crossing on Pittwater Road at the Mona Vale Road traffic lights.

The RTA will advise residents before work on starts.
