MEDIA RELEASE
14 December 2009
PLAN AHEAD AND TAKE CARE WHILE DRIVING IN THE
SOUTH WEST THIS FESTIVE SEASON
Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, take extra care while driving and ensure vehicles
are in a safe condition before travelling on NSW roads this Christmas and New Year
holiday period.
An RTA spokesperson said traffic increases considerably during the busy Christmas
school holidays, especially on major roads, including the Hume Highway.
We all know the holiday period over Christmas and New Year is a busy time on NSW
roads, the spokesperson said.
Take care, obey the road rules, drive safely and have regular breaks if you are planning to
travel long distances.
The spokesperson said to ensure the safety of motorists, major road work would be kept to
minimum.
While work sites will be closed, motorists are advised to follow all road signs, including
work site speed limits, for the safety of everyone on the road, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the recent completion of the Hume Highway duplication project,
including the Coolac bypass and duplication of the Sheahan Bridge, would improve
conditions for motorists.
We now have a dual road on the Hume Highway from Sydney to Melbourne, except for
the town bypasses of Tarcutta, Holbrook and Woomargama, where work will be starting
next year.
This is great news for motorists with improved travel times and better access.
Safety upgrades on the Newell Highway will continue after the holiday period.
Improvements at four rural road intersections along the Newell Highway are scheduled for
completion before to Christmas, while the upgrade of the intersection of the Newell
Highway and Temora to West Wyalong Road, five kilometres east of West Wyalong, is
expected to be completed by mid 2010.
Motorists are also advised that work to realign a one kilometre section of the Barton
Highway known as Capricorn Corner is continuing and is due for completion early next
year.
Traffic volumes on all major highways are expected to be at their highest on Friday
25,
Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 December.
Motorists are urged to plan their trips and take a break every two hours, making use of the
more than 1400 rest areas and driver reviver sites across the state, the spokesperson
said.
